GETTING TO KNOW ... Grade 1-2 teacher Nancy Miller

We are introducing this new feature to introduce the community to members of the Newmarket Schools staff, with the goal of getting to know each other a little better.

What is your job title and school?

I teach a Grades 1-2 multi-age classroom at the Elementary School. I also am a jump rope coach and run the school garden at NES.

What is your favorite part of your job and of teaching/working in Newmarket?

I love teaching children to read and inspiring them to love learning of all kinds.

Where did you grow up? Where did you go to college?

I grew up in Wellesley Mass. I went to Hood College and UNH

How long have you worked in Newmarket?

I have worked in Newmarket for 35 years. I did my student teaching here and never left.

Please tell us about your family.

I am married to Mr. Bonis and we have a big dog named Rocket.

What activities/interests do you enjoy outside of work?

I play ice hockey, ride my bike, garden, hike, read and knit for fun.

What is your favorite restaurant (or type of cuisine)?

I love all kinds of food and enjoy going to our local restaurants here in Newmarket.

If you had to eat one meal everyday for the rest of your life what would it be?

Tacos, but I would change up the toppings!

What is your favorite dessert?

Chocolate pie

What is the most interesting place you have visited in your travels?

Iceland

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why?

I would go back to Iceland and spend more time in the northern part exploring and camping.

If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead (besides family members), who would you choose, and why?

If you could magically master a new skill in one day what would it be?

Swimming

Name three items that are on your "bucket list."

  • A solo backpacking trip
  • A river cruise in Europe with a cycling component
  • To explore the national parks out west.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

  • For teaching: Don't offer a choice unless you are OK with all the options.
  • For life: Don't spend more than you earn.

What is a surprising or interesting thing that people may not know about you?

  • I have worked on two different islands.
  • I was a baker before I was a teacher
